SAFe® Scrum Master Certification (SSM)

If you already hold a PSM or a CSM you know Scrum at team level. SSM starts exactly there and adds the level above it: several teams that have to deliver inside the same Program Increment. You learn how a Scrum Master clears impediments that arise well outside their own team, and how to carry your team through a PI Planning. You can start right away. What you need: workable English for the SAFe terminology, which stays English throughout. Helpful: Scrum fundamentals from practice, no certificate needed for that.

SAFe® Scrum Master Course in Detail

The course follows one Program Increment from the Scrum Master's point of view. It starts at Scrum in the SAFe context, sharpens the role itself, runs through PI Planning and the work inside the iterations, and closes where an increment is finished and assessed.

01Scrum in the SAFe context

This part settles what survives from Scrum once several teams deliver together.

02Sharpening the Scrum Master role

The heaviest part of the course, because this is where the role's real work sits.

03Taking part in PI Planning

Here you carry your team through the two days in which the whole train commits.

Scaled Agile issues the certification as a PDF and as a digital badge for your online profiles. This certification has to be renewed. The first year is included in the course price, and renewal with Scaled Agile costs USD 195 per year after that.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

01Does SSM replace my PSM or CSM certification?
No. SSM replaces neither of them and requires neither. The Scaled Agile certification describes the Scrum Master role inside an Agile Release Train, that is across several teams rather than within a single one.
02Can I look things up in the SAFe Framework during the SAFe Scrum Master exam?
No. Scaled Agile runs the exam closed book and names the Big Picture specifically as material you may not use. Notes, published material and help from another person are all excluded.
03Do I need prior knowledge for the SAFe Scrum Master?
No, Scaled Agile sets no formal admission requirements for the SSM certification and does not require a prior course. Scrum fundamentals from practice help you keep up with the pace in the tecnovy training.
04Do I need an Agile Release Train to put SSM into practice?
Not necessarily. The facilitation, conflict and flow techniques work in a single team too; the PI Planning and Inspect and Adapt parts only pay off once several teams deliver together.
05What happens if I do not pass the SAFe Scrum Master exam?
The tecnovy course price covers two exam attempts, as long as you use them within 60 days of the course ending. Every further attempt costs USD 50 with Scaled Agile.
06Does my SAFe Scrum Master certification expire?
Yes, it has to be renewed, and that first year is included in the tecnovy course price. To renew it afterwards Scaled Agile charges USD 195 plus 12 continuing education units every year. Your SAFe Studio membership renews automatically unless you cancel it at least 24 hours before the cycle ends.
07What material do I get in the SAFe Scrum Master training?
You get the course material in digital form and keep it permanently. Every flipchart worked out during the tecnovy training reaches you afterwards as a photo protocol.
