CompTIA Security+ Certification

In most teams security is nobody's entire job and everybody's responsibility. CompTIA Security+ therefore covers the whole surface rather than one specialism: placing threats, securing architectures, handling incidents, and justifying risk decisions to management. The heaviest weight, 28 percent of the exam, sits on security operations, the largest of the five exam domains, which is the work that actually comes up every day.

What this module delivers.

Security+ is the broad qualification for everyone who carries security alongside their actual role. You recognise threats, assess risks and justify measures instead of operating single tools. Your team gains a shared security language from it.

Fit

Who this module is designed for

Typical roles

  • You carry security alongside another role, in administration or operations for example.
  • You assess alerts and incidents and decide what gets escalated.
  • You justify security measures to business units or to management.

Prerequisites

No prerequisites

You can start right away. What you need: English, because the examination is not offered in German. Helpful: network fundamentals at CompTIA Network+ level, two years of practice in administration or systems operations.

Consider instead CompTIA CySA+ · CompTIA - Cybersecurity Analyst (CySA+) Certification Deepens detection, analysis and response if you already work with alerts daily.

Curriculum

CompTIA Security+ Curriculum in Detail

The course follows the five CompTIA Security+ exam domains in the order in which they build on each other: first the concepts and control types, then threats and mitigations, then architecture, operations, and finally governance and compliance.

01General security concepts

The opening establishes the terms without which the rest does not hold.

  • Control types from technical and managerial through to compensating
  • Confidentiality, integrity and availability as connected goals
  • Zero trust, plus authentication, authorisation and accounting
  • Cryptographic methods, PKI and digital signatures
02Threats, vulnerabilities and mitigations

The largest block of the first half, because this is where the attack side is understood.

  • Threat actors from insiders to nation-states, and what motivates them
  • Attack vectors via messages, supply chains and social engineering
  • Vulnerabilities in applications, cloud services, mobile devices and operating systems
  • Mitigations: segmentation, hardening, isolation and patching
03Security architecture

Here the perspective shifts from the single attack to the system design.

  • Architecture models from on-premises through cloud to IoT and industrial control
  • Security principles applied to infrastructure and communication paths
  • Data classification and the protection that follows from it
  • Resilience, backups and continuity of operations
04Security operations

By far the largest exam domain, and that mirrors the daily work.

  • Secure baselines, hardening, and securing mobile and wireless access
  • Vulnerability management from detection through to reporting
  • Firewalls, IDS and IPS, DNS filtering, DLP, plus EDR and XDR
  • Identity and access management with single sign-on and multifactor authentication
  • Incident response from the alert through root cause analysis to forensics
05Governance, risk and compliance

The close connects the technical side with the decisions others have to make.

  • Policies, standards and responsibilities in the security organisation
  • Identifying and assessing risks, and justifying them with an impact analysis
  • Vendor and third-party risk across the whole contract cycle
  • Audits, penetration testing and security awareness across the workforce

Outcome

What you will be able to do afterwards

  1. 01

You classify security controls by type and justify which control protects which goal.

  2. 02

You distinguish threat actors by motivation and name their typical attack paths.

  3. 03

You select mitigations such as segmentation, hardening and patching to fit the vulnerability.

  4. 04

You assess architectures from on-premises to cloud for their security consequences.

  5. 05

You handle security incidents along a defined process rather than ad hoc.

  6. 06

You plan identity and access concepts with multifactor authentication.

  7. 07

You carry out a risk assessment and derive justified decisions from it.

CompTIA Security+

CompTIA awards the certification once you pass the examination. It evidences that you can place and justify security work across the whole breadth of an IT operation. Unlike the certificates of many other schemes this certification expires three years after you pass; you keep it valid with 50 continuing education units, or renew it by earning a higher CompTIA certification.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

01Where do I sit the CompTIA Security+ examination?
Pearson VUE administers the examination, either at a test centre or online proctored from home. tecnovy prepares you for it and does not administer it.
02What language is the examination in?
The CompTIA Security+ examination is offered in English, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish and Thai, but not in German. The tecnovy training runs in German, and you learn the terminology in both languages.
03Do I need prior knowledge for CompTIA Security+?
No, CompTIA sets no formal prerequisites for any of its examinations. CompTIA recommends network fundamentals at Network+ level and around two years of practice, but does not require them.
04How long is the CompTIA Security+ certification valid?
Three years from passing. You keep it valid with 50 continuing education units, or it renews automatically as soon as you earn a higher CompTIA certification.
05What happens if I do not pass the examination?

06What is the difference between Security+ and CySA+?
CompTIA Security+ covers the breadth and addresses everyone who shares responsibility for security. CompTIA CySA+ picks up afterwards and deepens detection, analysis and response for roles working with alerts and incidents daily.
07What materials do I receive?
You receive the training materials for all five exam domains, plus a photo record of the flipcharts produced during the course, including the examples from your own environment.
