SAFe® Agile Software Engineering Certification (ASE)

Everything else on this board is about roles, events and budgets. ASE is about the code. For three days you work on the practices that build quality in rather than inspect for it afterwards: test-first, behaviour-driven development, refactoring, and design that survives change. This is the technical groundwork without which an Agile Release Train does not hold its pace for long. Without it every change costs more than the change itself.

What this module delivers.

ASE is the only SAFe module whose subject is the code. You write tests before the implementation, describe behaviour with BDD, and refactor designs that would otherwise make every change expensive.

Fit

Who this module is designed for

Typical roles

  • You write the code that ships inside the Agile Release Train.
  • Quality regularly lands at the end of your iteration and then gets dropped.
  • Changes to your code cost more than the size of the change explains.

Prerequisites

No prerequisites

You can start right away. What you need: active coding practice, because the course works on code, solid English, because Scaled Agile offers this exam in English only.

Consider instead SAFe® for Teams Covers working inside an Agile Release Train without going into the engineering practices.

Curriculum

SAFe® ASE Course in Detail

The course runs from the principles behind built-in quality through testing, story details and behaviour-driven development to models, code and design quality, and closes on putting it into your own code.

01Connecting principles and practices

The opening settles why built-in quality is not a matter of discipline.

  • What separates agile software engineering from agile project work
  • The practices from Extreme Programming in overview
  • What trade-offs built-in quality actually demands
02Accelerating flow and using architecture

Here the development work connects to the value stream around it.

  • Tracing the flow of value through to the customer
  • Validating the benefit hypothesis behind a feature
  • Designing for testability instead of retrofitting it
03Thinking test-first

The part that reverses the order of implementation and testing.

  • Shifting testing left
  • The agile testing matrix and what it covers
  • Non-functional requirements as something you test
  • Building quality throughout the pipeline
04Discovering story details

How a rough requirement becomes something you can build.

  • Criteria a story can be measured against
  • Splitting stories to deliver sooner
  • Building workflows and story maps
  • Naming assumptions and risks before they get expensive
05Shared understanding with BDD

The heaviest part of the course, because it translates domain rules into tests.

  • Behaviour-driven development as a shared language
  • Describing behaviour for business rules and algorithms
  • Applying test doubles where real dependencies get in the way
  • Finding existing tests a new requirement touches
06Communicating with models

Short, but the point at which designs become shareable.

  • What models in design are actually good for
  • Telling static and dynamic models apart
07Code and design quality

Here quality gets concrete enough to name in a review.

  • Cohesion and coupling as a yardstick
  • Further code qualities, and what collective ownership buys
  • Interface-oriented design and the SOLID principles
  • Applying design patterns where they solve a problem
08Implementing with quality

The closing part brings the practices to your own code.

  • Test-driven development in practice
  • Refactoring so that new behaviour has room at all
  • Writing your own plan for adopting this in your team

Outcome

What you will be able to do afterwards

  1. 01

You connect the SAFe principles to the practices that build quality in.

  2. 02

You write tests before the implementation and shift testing left.

  3. 03

You cut stories smaller and surface the assumptions and risks while doing it.

  4. 04

You describe intended behaviour with BDD as shared ground inside the team.

  5. 05

You communicate designs through static and dynamic models.

  6. 06

You assess cohesion and coupling and justify design decisions with them.

  7. 07

You refactor existing code so it can take on new behaviour at all.

Certified SAFe® Agile Software Engineer

Scaled Agile issues the certification as a PDF and as a digital badge for your online profiles. This certification has to be renewed. The first year is included in the course price; the renewal fee depends on the tier Scaled Agile assigns the certification to and is stated in the Scaled Agile renewal FAQs.

After the course the exam waits in your SAFe Studio account and is administered online by Scaled Agile rather than by tecnovy. Scaled Agile publishes contradictory figures for this exam's question count and duration; the binding values are the ones in your SAFe Studio account. Scaled Agile offers this exam in English only. You attend the training in German and sit the exam in English, which is why the English terminology is used throughout the course.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

01Which programming language is ASE built around?
None in particular. The practices in ASE, that is test-first, BDD, refactoring and design-oriented principles, are language independent, and in the tecnovy training you carry them over to your own technology stack.
02Can I take the ASE exam in German?
No. Scaled Agile offers the ASE exam in English only. The tecnovy training runs in German, which is why we carry the English terminology throughout.
03Can I look things up in the SAFe Framework during the SAFe ASE exam?
No. Scaled Agile runs the exam closed book and names the Big Picture specifically as material you may not use. Notes, published material and help from another person are all excluded.
04Do I need prior knowledge for ASE?
Scaled Agile states explicitly that no prerequisites are required for this certification. In practice you do need current coding experience, because the tecnovy training works on code.
05What happens if I do not pass the SAFe ASE exam?
The tecnovy course price covers one exam attempt, as long as you use it within 60 days of the course ending. Every further attempt costs USD 50 with Scaled Agile.
06Does my SAFe ASE certification expire?
Yes, it has to be renewed, and that first year is included in the tecnovy course price. To renew it afterwards Scaled Agile charges a fee that varies by certification tier plus 12 continuing education units every year. Your SAFe Studio membership renews automatically unless you cancel it at least 24 hours before the cycle ends.
07What material do I get in the ASE training?
You get the course material in digital form and keep it permanently. Every flipchart worked out during the tecnovy training reaches you afterwards as a photo protocol.
