Alexander Pritzkau’s Perspective on iSAQB Certification

Is iSAQB certification a waste of money and time? Why or why not?

No, it’s not a waste of time or money. The iSAQB Foundation module is sufficient for acquiring the knowledge and the tools that are necessary for an architect. However, in the world we live in, where experience is valuable, formal certification is often necessary for demonstrating skills. The certification is definitely worthwhile, as it provides a clear understanding of what is required to be a software architect, especially in an enterprise context.

iSAQB® - Foundation Level   Training

Why did you initially choose to get iSAQB certified?

When I started at Inverso, my title was architect, but I didn’t fully understand what being a software architect in this kind of company meant. I wanted to be worthy of that title. So, I looked for relevant trainings or certifications, and I stumbled upon the iSAQB Certified Architect Foundation level. After reviewing the curriculum, I realized it aligned perfectly with what I needed to do in my role, so I decided to go for it.

How long did it take you to prepare for and pass the exam?

I took the Foundation level course a few years ago, which lasted about four days. The trainer provided plenty of relevant examples, which helped prepare us for the exam. I spent a few evenings reviewing what we had covered each day, and by the end of the course, I felt fully prepared for the certification exam.

Did the certification help you get a salary increase or a better position/job?

There was no immediate salary increase or change in position due to the certification. However, with the regular outcomes of reaching certain goals, I eventually received a better salary. The certification itself didn’t have a direct impact on that, but it did help in shaping my understanding of the architecture role.

How do employers and clients view the iSAQB certification?

My colleagues appreciated the certification because it equipped me with the skills and methodologies necessary for the role. They valued the knowledge that came with it. However, most of my clients didn’t care about the certification, as they weren’t familiar with it. But within the company, it was well-regarded, as it demonstrated that I had formal architectural training.

What specific skills did you gain that you couldn’t have learned on the job?

The certification provided more than just technical skills; it also helped shape my attitude as an architect. It taught me how to approach the architecture process holistically, understanding the importance of stakeholder communication, requirements, and how to manage them effectively. This is something I didn’t fully grasp on the job at first. The certification helped me develop a more structured approach to handling architectural challenges.

How applicable is what you learned in real-world projects?

The skills I gained from iSAQB are highly applicable to real-world projects. I use tools and methods learned from the certification in my daily work, such as understanding how to evaluate quality attributes and making architectural decisions based on those. The practical aspects of the training helped me improve my communication with developers and other stakeholders.

Is the certification more focused on theory or practical application?

The Foundation level course provides a good mix of theory and practical applications. It’s a solid introduction to architecture with relevant examples and concepts. The Advanced level courses I attended were more theoretical as well, but the practical experience you gain in the examination tasks is where the real value lies. It’s that hands-on experience that really helps solidify the knowledge.

Does iSAQB stay up to date with modern architectural trends like cloud and AI?

I believe iSAQB does stay up to date with modern trends, but I think there’s always room for improvement. The Foundation and Advanced levels provide a strong foundational understanding, and some of the modules, like DDD (Domain-Driven Design), are quite relevant today. However, newer trends like cloud and AI are addressed in some modules, but you’d need to take specialized courses for a deeper dive into those areas.

iSAQB® DDD   Training

Do you feel that iSAQB helped you communicate better with stakeholders or developers?

Absolutely. One of the biggest benefits I gained from the certification was improved communication skills. As an architect, communicating with stakeholders and developers is crucial. The training helped me learn how to present my architectural decisions in a clear and structured manner, making it easier to align everyone’s goals and expectations.

What’s the biggest difference you noticed in your work after getting certified?

After getting certified, I found that my approach to architecture became much more structured. I gained a deeper understanding of the roles involved in the process, the requirements, and how to balance those with technical constraints. The certification also helped me better articulate the rationale behind architectural decisions, which made a huge difference in my day-to-day work.

Would you say this certification has made you a better architect? How?

Yes, I would say it has definitely made me a better architect. The biggest improvement has been in my ability to manage complex architectural decisions and communicate them effectively to others. The training helped me understand the key aspects of architecture, from designing systems to handling quality attributes and stakeholder communication. All of these factors are crucial in becoming a better architect.

Do you think iSAQB certification is necessary for software architects, or just nice to have?

iSAQB certification is not absolutely necessary, but it’s definitely beneficial. While experience plays a big role, the certification provides a structured framework for learning that you might not get from just on-the-job experience. It’s a solid foundation for anyone looking to get into architecture or deepen their existing knowledge.

Have you noticed a shift in how your colleagues view you after certification?

I haven’t noticed a significant shift in how my colleagues view me, but it did help me build a stronger rapport with them. It gave me a common framework to speak from, and I was able to engage in more meaningful architectural discussions, which created a better mutual understanding.

Would you recommend this certification to someone who’s already experienced in the field? Why?

I would recommend the certification to someone who is transitioning into architecture or looking to formalize their architectural knowledge. For experienced architects, it might be less of a challenge, but it still offers valuable insights into methodologies and frameworks that can broaden your perspective.

Conclusion

Alexander Pritzkau’s experience with the iSAQB certification highlights its value in providing a structured foundation for anyone moving into or progressing in software architecture. While it may not immediately impact salary or position, it has undeniably helped him become a more effective architect.

For those looking to formalize their architectural knowledge or transition into architecture, the iSAQB certification offers a solid pathway to develop essential skills in communication, design, and decision-making.
