Curriculum
CPSA Foundation Level Curriculum 2025.1
The official iSAQB curriculum 2025.1 structures the Foundation Level into six parts with 1080 recommended minutes in total. tecnovy follows that structure and practises it on one continuous case study, with the emphasis on design and development.
01Basic Concepts of Software Architecture
This part builds a shared understanding of what software architecture is and which role you take in it.
- Recognised definitions, goals and benefits of software architecture
- Tasks and responsibilities of architects inside the team
- Where architecture work sits in the development process
02Requirements and Constraints
Here you work out where architecture takes its input from, before the first structure exists.
- Telling functional requirements and quality goals apart, and prioritising them
- Capturing constraints and influencing factors from the project context
- Identifying stakeholders and what they expect
- Sharpening requirements until they can carry design decisions
03Design and Development of Software Architectures
The longest part of the curriculum: turning requirements into structures that hold.
- Decomposing systems into building blocks and designing their interfaces
- Applying design principles, patterns and architecture styles deliberately
- Planning cross-cutting concerns such as persistence, security and error handling
- Justifying decisions together with their alternatives and consequences
04Specification and Communication of Software Architectures
An architecture only works when other people understand it, so this part practises making it visible.
- Producing building-block, runtime and deployment views
- Choosing notations and documentation structures that fit the audience
- Recording architecture decisions so they stay traceable
- Explaining designs to technical and non-technical stakeholders
05Analysis and Assessment of Software Architectures
You check whether an architecture really carries its quality goals.
- Applying scenario-based assessment methods
- Spotting risks and weak points in a design
- Judging quality attributes with suitable metrics
06Examples of Software Architectures
Examples make architecture knowledge tangible and bridge it into your daily work.
- Analysing real architectures and the design decisions behind them
- Following the link between requirements and the chosen solution
- Carrying the patterns into your own systems
Outcome
What you will be able to do afterwards
- 01
You explain the goals, benefits and limits of software architecture and your role in it.
- 02
You derive quality goals and constraints from the project context.
- 03
You decompose systems into building blocks and design their interfaces.
- 04
You justify design decisions using principles and patterns.
- 05
You document architectures in suitable views for different stakeholders.
- 06
You evaluate architectures with scenario-based methods and name the risks.
- 07
You interpret real architecture examples and carry the patterns into your own systems.

Experiences
What participants say
I had the opportunity to take part in an online iSAQB CPSA-F training from tecnovy. I was very positively impressed by the training and by the way the whole thing was run. It was really well structured, the trainer answered all of our questions and kept everything interesting across the three training days. I can absolutely recommend this iSAQB training!
Gernot Starke made the remote training highly interactive and enjoyable. The fact alone that he introduced himself by video beforehand hinted at that. You also notice straight away what a wealth of experience and knowledge he has. It really was a great experience!
I attended the iSAQB Software Architecture Foundation seminar and was extremely satisfied! What I liked best were the hands-on group exercises and how committed Gernot Starke was as a trainer. The course prepared me perfectly for the exam that followed, which I passed in the end. I will certainly attend more courses at tecnovy.
FAQs

03What is the CPSA-F exam format?
The iSAQB CPSA-F exam consists of about 40 multiple-choice questions, and you get 75 minutes, or 90 minutes as a non-native speaker. You need 60 per cent of the achievable points to pass. It is the official iSAQB exam, not a tecnovy quiz.
