OWASP Top 10 for LLM and GenAI Applications

The OWASP GenAI Security Project's list opens with LLM01:2026 Prompt Injection and closes with LLM10:2026 Improper Output Handling. In between sit risks such as Excessive Agency, where a model may do too much, and Hidden Context Exposure, where hidden instructions are extracted. This training works through all ten entries of the 2026 edition. For each risk you see a demonstration on a sample application and choose countermeasures for development, testing and operation.

What this module delivers.

A finding tagged LLM08:2026 means the same risk to development, testing and security. In tecnovy's OWASP Top 10 for LLM and GenAI Applications you map weaknesses to the ten entries, assess them and choose countermeasures.

Fit

Who this module is designed for

Typical roles

  • You build applications in which an LLM processes input and generates responses.
  • You are the application security contact in a development team, for example as a security champion.
  • You test LLM applications or design their architecture.

Prerequisites

No prerequisites

You can start right away. What you need: experience in software development or IT security.

Consider instead AI Security & LLM Security Attacking AI systems yourself instead of watching risks demonstrated: lab exercises from which you develop protective measures.

Curriculum

OWASP Top 10 for LLM and GenAI Applications Course in Detail

Five parts: first the project behind the list, then the ten risks in three groups according to where they arise in an application, and finally putting it to work in your team. Every risk follows the same sequence of explanation, demonstration and countermeasures.

01Introduction to the OWASP GenAI Security Project

The opening part clarifies who publishes the list and how an entry is built.

  • OWASP as a nonprofit foundation and the list as a community project
  • The 2026 edition of August 2026, current as of November 2026, free under CC BY-SA 4.0
  • Structure of an entry: description, common examples, mitigations, attack scenarios
02Risks in inputs and outputs

This part covers everything that goes into the model and comes out of it.

  • LLM01:2026 Prompt Injection: injected instructions change how the model behaves
  • LLM02:2026 Sensitive Information Disclosure: confidential data ends up in responses
  • LLM10:2026 Improper Output Handling: output passes to other components unchecked
03Risks in data and the supply chain

This part traces where the model and data of an application come from.

  • LLM04:2026 Supply Chain: risks from third-party models, data and components
  • LLM05:2026 Data and Model Poisoning: manipulated data in training, fine-tuning, embeddings or retrieved documents
  • LLM09:2026 Vector and Embedding Weaknesses: flaws in vector stores, which hold text as numeric vectors for search
04Risks in operation

This part covers the risks that surface while an application is running.

  • LLM03:2026 Excessive Agency: too much functionality, permission or autonomy
  • LLM06:2026 Unbounded Consumption: uncontrolled use of compute and budget
  • LLM07:2026 Misinformation: false output that sounds credible
  • LLM08:2026 Hidden Context Exposure: system prompt, developer instructions or tool schemas are extracted
05Putting it to work in the team

Finally you carry the list into the work of your team.

  • Deriving security requirements for LLM applications from the ten risks
  • Tests for LLM applications that target individual risks
  • Reviews that check new features against the list

Outcome

What you will be able to do afterwards

  1. 01

You map a weakness in an LLM application to the matching entry from LLM01 to LLM10.

  2. 02

You spot prompt injection and improper output handling in the inputs and outputs of an application.

  3. 03

You check whether sensitive information or hidden context such as the system prompt can leak through the responses of a model.

  4. 04

You assess the data, model sources and vector stores of your application for poisoning and supply chain risks.

  5. 05

You set what an LLM in your application may execute and how many resources it may consume.

  6. 06

You determine where your application must check model output before anyone relies on it.

  7. 07

You match suitable countermeasures in development, testing and operation to each of the ten risks.

  8. 08

You write security requirements, tests and review points for LLM applications in your team.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

01Is this an OWASP certification?
No. OWASP issues no certificate for the Top 10 for LLM Applications, and the tecnovy OWASP Top 10 for LLM and GenAI Applications training ends without an examination, with the tecnovy certificate of participation. OWASP is a nonprofit foundation, the list is a community project, and the training is a tecnovy course.
02Which edition of the OWASP list does the training cover?
The tecnovy OWASP Top 10 for LLM and GenAI Applications training covers the OWASP Top 10 for LLM Applications 2026, entries LLM01:2026 to LLM10:2026. The OWASP GenAI Security Project published it in August 2026, replacing the 2025 edition of November 2024, and as of November 2026 it is the current one. The project publishes the list freely under the CC BY-SA 4.0 licence.
03Will my LLM application be secure after the training?
No training can promise that. In the tecnovy OWASP Top 10 for LLM and GenAI Applications training you learn to recognise the ten risks, assess them and match countermeasures to them. For LLM01:2026 Prompt Injection, OWASP states that no reliable prevention mechanism exists today, so only your own tests show whether your measures hold.
04Is software development experience enough without a security background?
Yes, software development experience is enough for the tecnovy OWASP Top 10 for LLM and GenAI Applications training. IT security experience without programming practice is enough too, and there is no formal admission requirement.
05How does the training differ from AI Security & LLM Security?
The tecnovy OWASP Top 10 for LLM and GenAI Applications training works through the list entry by entry, with a demonstration and countermeasures for each risk. In AI Security & LLM Security you attack AI systems yourself in a lab environment, including red teaming exercises, meaning targeted attacks that uncover weaknesses.
06How does my team carry the content into its development process?
In the final part of the tecnovy OWASP Top 10 for LLM and GenAI Applications training you derive security requirements, tests and review points for LLM applications from the ten risks. Your team can then check new features against the same list.
07Which tecnovy training comes next?
After OWASP Top 10 for LLM and GenAI Applications, tecnovy's Secure AI Architecture comes next for security at the architecture level. There you set trust boundaries, least privilege and isolation for AI systems before they are built.
