HERMES® Foundation Level 2022 Certification

HERMES belongs to no association and no vendor. It belongs to the Swiss Confederation, represented by the Federal Chancellery, which publishes the whole method openly and free of charge. Anyone working in or for Swiss public administration meets it sooner or later. In the Foundation training you work through its phase model, its modules and its role model, and afterwards sit the certification exam with TÜV SÜD.

HERMES® Foundation 2022 Course in Detail

The course follows the structure of the method. It starts at the origin and purpose of HERMES, moves through the phase model, the modules and the roles to the scenarios and their tailoring, and closes on an exercise project and exam preparation.

01Introduction to HERMES 2022

The opening settles who owns the method and what it is for.

02Phase model and ways of working

This is the frame everything else hangs on.

  • Classic: Initialisierung, Konzept, Realisierung, Einführung, Abschluss

  • Milestones and phase releases as decision points
03Modules and method elements

Modules bundle tasks, results and roles around one topic.

HERMES Foundation personal certificate

The certificate is issued by the TÜV SÜD Examination Institute rather than the Federal Chancellery: the Chancellery owns the method, the institute owns the certification. The certificate is valid indefinitely and never needs renewing.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

01What does the HERMES Foundation examination look like?
40 single-choice questions in 60 minutes, closed book, passed at 60 percent of the attainable points. Exactly one answer per question is correct, and a wrong tick costs you no points.
02Is the examination fee included in the course price?
Yes. The external TÜV SÜD certification fee is covered by the tecnovy seminar price and is not charged again during registration. Booking the same exam directly with TÜV SÜD costs CHF 350 excl. VAT.
03Do I need prior knowledge for HERMES Foundation?
There is no formal admission requirement: you can register for the exam without presenting anything. TÜV SÜD does however expect a basic grounding in HERMES and in project management, and recommends two to three days of training beforehand.
04Does the HERMES certificate expire?
No. The TÜV SÜD Examination Institute personal certificate is valid indefinitely and never needs renewing. That sets HERMES apart from schemes such as ITIL, whose certification expires after three years.
05What happens if I do not pass the examination?
You receive a result confirmation for having sat the exam and may retake it twice. Those retakes have to happen within one year, using the dates available.
06Is "edition 2022" still current?
Yes. The year names the method generation, not the revision level: the Federal Chancellery now publishes edition 2022 in its third revision, last updated on 9 March 2026. TÜV SÜD examinations have been set against that third revision since 1 February 2026.
07Does HERMES cover agile ways of working?
Yes, and the difference shows in the phase model: classically a project runs through Initialisierung, Konzept, Realisierung, Einführung and Abschluss, while the agile variant has only Initialisierung, Umsetzung and Abschluss. Both are part of the method and of the exam scope.
08What material do I get in the HERMES Foundation training?
You get the seminar material digitally and keep it permanently. Every flipchart worked out during the training reaches you afterwards as a photo protocol. The reference manual itself is freely available from the Federal Chancellery.
09How does HERMES relate to PRINCE2, PMI or IPMA?
HERMES is the project management standard of the Swiss Confederation and is correspondingly widespread in public administration. Unlike the standards named above it belongs to a state, is published in full and is free to use.
