Fit
Who this module is designed for
Typical roles
- You write test cases and want to use a language model without taking its output on trust.
- You are accountable for which project data a language model gets to see at all.
- You help decide whether and how generative AI enters your test process.
Prerequisites
Formal prerequisites
- For exam admission: the ISTQB Certified Tester Foundation Level certificate. The syllabus states this as a requirement, not a recommendation.
Consider instead CT-AI Covers testing AI-based systems, where CT-GenAI puts generative AI to work in testing.
Curriculum
ISTQB CT-GenAI Course in Detail
Syllabus 1.1 splits CT-GenAI into five chapters across at least 13.6 hours of instruction. It runs from the model types through prompt engineering and the risks to infrastructure and team adoption. Almost half the time goes to a single chapter.
01Introduction to Generative AI for Software Testing
This chapter sorts out the terms before anybody writes a prompt.
- The AI spectrum from symbolic AI through classic ML and deep learning to generative AI
- Foundation, instruction-tuned and reasoning LLMs compared
- Multimodal LLMs and vision-language models
- Which LLM capabilities actually matter for testing tasks
02Prompt Engineering for Effective Software Testing
The dominant chapter: this is where usable parts company with plausible.
- Prompt structure, system prompt against user prompt, and the core techniques in testing
- Test analysis, test design and test implementation with generative AI
- Automated regression testing, plus test monitoring and test control
- Metrics for scoring the output, and the iterative refinement of prompts
03Managing Risks of Generative AI in Software Testing
The part that stops the time saved from being paid for twice later.
- Spotting and mitigating hallucinations, reasoning errors and bias
- Getting non-deterministic language model behaviour under control
- Data protection and security gaps, and the strategies against them
- Energy use, AI regulation, standards and best-practice frameworks
04LLM-Powered Test Infrastructure for Software Testing
Where single prompts turn into infrastructure a team can actually operate.
- The architecture components and concepts of an LLM-powered test infrastructure
- Retrieval-augmented generation
- LLM-powered agents in the automation of test processes
- Fine-tuning for testing tasks, and LLMOps in operation
05Deploying and Integrating Generative AI in Test Organizations
To close, the question of how any of this lands with a team.
- The risks of shadow AI and the key points of an AI strategy
- Selecting LLMs and SLMs for testing tasks, and the phases of adoption
- Which skills testing with generative AI actually demands
- Building those skills in the test team and evolving the test processes
Outcome
What you will be able to do afterwards
- 01
You tell foundation, instruction-tuned and reasoning LLMs apart, and choose on that basis.
- 02
You build prompts from a system and a user part for test analysis, design and implementation.
- 03
You score a prompt's output against metrics and refine it iteratively.
- 04
You put generative AI to work in automated regression testing and in test monitoring.
- 05
You recognise hallucinations, reasoning errors and bias, and mitigate them deliberately.
- 06
You judge the data protection and security gaps in using language models for testing.
- 07
You place retrieval-augmented generation and LLM-powered agents inside a test infrastructure.
- 08
You recognise the risks of shadow AI and plan the roll-out within a test team.
Certified Tester Testing with Generative AI
Once you pass, you receive the official ISTQB certificate at Specialist Level. It is valid for life and never needs renewing.
