ISTQB® CT-GenAI - Testing with Generative AI

A prompt that returns usable test cases looks different from one that returns plausible nonsense, and the difference can be taught. Formal prerequisites

  • For exam admission: the ISTQB Certified Tester Foundation Level certificate. The syllabus states this as a requirement, not a recommendation.

Consider instead CT-AI Covers testing AI-based systems, where CT-GenAI puts generative AI to work in testing.

ISTQB CT-GenAI Course in Detail

Syllabus 1.1 splits CT-GenAI into five chapters across at least 13.6 hours of instruction. It runs from the model types through prompt engineering and the risks to infrastructure and team adoption. Almost half the time goes to a single chapter.

The examination is administered by our exam partners iSQI and Brightest, not by tecnovy. The syllabus's 24 hands-on units are compulsory in the course but explicitly not examinable. If you do not sit the exam in your native language you can apply for 25 percent more time; the application has to be in at least one week before the exam date.

Frequently asked questions

01What is the difference between CT-GenAI and CT-AI?
CT-GenAI uses generative AI in testing; CT-AI tests AI-based systems. ISTQB drew the line itself: with CT-AI 2.0 the chapter on testing with AI was removed entirely and moved into CT-GenAI. Both modules require CTFL, and neither requires the other.
02What do I need in order to sit the CT-GenAI examination?
The ISTQB Certified Tester Foundation Level certificate, and nothing else. The syllabus states it as a requirement: the Foundation Level certificate has to be obtained before the CT-GenAI exam. On the subject itself the course starts at the beginning, because chapter 1 introduces the AI spectrum and the model types from scratch.
03How is the CT-GenAI examination structured?
The CT-GenAI exam is 40 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes, and you pass from 30 of 46 points. There is no practical component: the syllabus explicitly excludes the course exercises from the examination.
04Is the examination part of the tecnovy CT-GenAI training?
No. The tecnovy CT-GenAI training prepares you for the examination, which is administered by our exam partners iSQI and Brightest. You add it during registration; it is not part of the seminar price.
05How hands-on is the CT-GenAI training really?
The syllabus prescribes 24 hands-on units: you solve 17 of them yourself during the course, and the trainer demonstrates the remaining 7. Running the exercises in class is not a provider extra; it is a condition of ISTQB accreditation.
06Does CT-GenAI teach me one particular AI tool?
No. The syllabus is vendor-neutral and instead covers how you select models for your testing tasks and what drives that choice. The tecnovy CT-GenAI training therefore teaches no single product, but the techniques that carry across all of them.
07Why does the CT-GenAI training run for two days?
Because the syllabus sets a minimum of 13.6 hours of instruction for accredited courses, that is 815 minutes across five chapters. Almost half of it goes to prompt engineering alone. The tecnovy CT-GenAI training gives that two days.
