ISO/IEC 42001 Foundation: Understanding AI Management Systems

ISO/IEC 42001 certification goes to an organisation's AI management system (AIMS), after an audit by an independent certification body. A certificate held by a person is something else. Here you learn about the standard, and the tecnovy certificate of participation documents attendance. You work through the requirements of clauses 4 to 10, see where the Annex A controls fit in, and set the standard apart from ISO/IEC 27001 and the EU AI Act.

What this module delivers.

The tecnovy ISO 42001 Foundation is where compliance, risk and IT staff start before an AI management system is introduced or audited. You then explain the standard's structure, requirements and limits, and your team plans on shared ground.

Curriculum

ISO 42001 Foundation in Detail

The training follows a path through ISO/IEC 42001:2023: from the basics of AI governance through the structure of the standard to its requirements and controls. It closes by placing the standard beside ISO/IEC 27001 and the EU AI Act.

01Basics of AI and AI governance

The opening settles what an AI management system actually decides about.

  • Basic concepts of artificial intelligence
  • What AI governance regulates in an organisation
  • Roles and responsibility for AI systems
02Structure of ISO/IEC 42001

This part shows why the standard feels familiar if you know other management systems.

  • The harmonised structure for management systems
  • Clauses 4 to 10 and how they connect
  • Scope for organisations that develop, provide or use AI
03Requirements and controls

The core of the training: what the standard asks of an AIMS.

  • Context of the organisation and leadership
  • Planning with risk assessment and impact assessment
  • Operating the AI management system
  • Controls in Annex A
04Placing the standard

Finally the standard sits beside the rules it meets in day-to-day work.

  • How it works with ISO/IEC 27001
  • Its relation to the EU AI Act
  • Links to the organisation's other management systems

Outcome

What you will be able to do afterwards

  1. 01

You explain the purpose and scope of ISO/IEC 42001 for organisations that develop, provide or use AI.

  2. 02

You describe how the standard is built on the harmonised structure for management systems.

  3. 03

You map the requirements for context, leadership, planning and operation of an AIMS to clauses 4 to 10.

  4. 04

You distinguish AI risk assessment from the impact assessment of AI systems.

  5. 05

You explain what role the Annex A controls play beside the requirements of clauses 4 to 10.

  6. 06

You compare ISO/IEC 42001 with ISO/IEC 27001 and show where the two management systems interlock.

  7. 07

You set out what an AIMS can and cannot contribute to meeting the EU AI Act.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

01Am I certified to ISO/IEC 42001 after the training?
No, ISO/IEC 42001 certification applies to an organisation's AI management system, not to a person. For the tecnovy ISO 42001 Foundation you receive a tecnovy certificate of participation once you attend at least 80 % of the course; it documents participation, not a passed exam.
02How does an organisation get certified to ISO/IEC 42001?
An independent certification body audits the organisation's AI management system and then issues the certificate; ISO itself does not certify. The tecnovy ISO 42001 Foundation explains the requirements that audit checks.
03Can I earn a PECB certificate with the tecnovy ISO 42001 Foundation?
No, the tecnovy ISO 42001 Foundation is a tecnovy training without an exam, not a PECB course. PECB requires completion of its own PECB training course for its ISO/IEC 42001 Foundation certificate (as of November 2026).
04Is ISO/IEC 42001 mandatory for organisations?
No, ISO/IEC 42001 is a voluntary international standard that an organisation adopts by its own decision. An AI management system built on it can help put requirements such as those of the EU AI Act into practice in a structured way, which the tecnovy ISO 42001 Foundation shows you.
05Does an organisation certified to ISO/IEC 42001 comply with the EU AI Act?
No, ISO/IEC 42001 certification does not show that an organisation complies with the EU AI Act. Its obligations depend on the organisation's role and on the risk class of each AI system; the tecnovy ISO 42001 Foundation shows where an AIMS helps with that and where it does not.
06How does ISO/IEC 42001 relate to ISO/IEC 27001?
Both are management system standards built on the same harmonised structure, so their clauses 4 to 10 look alike. ISO/IEC 27001 covers information security, ISO/IEC 42001 the responsible handling of AI; in the tecnovy ISO 42001 Foundation you examine how the standards work together.
07Which other ISO standards on AI exist besides ISO/IEC 42001?
ISO names, among others, ISO/IEC 22989 with AI terms and concepts and ISO/IEC 23894 as guidance on AI risk management (as of November 2026). ISO/IEC 42001 is the management system standard among them, with requirements an organisation can be certified against.
08Where do I go after the tecnovy ISO 42001 Foundation?
If you have to introduce an AI management system, continue with the tecnovy ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer training. If you want to audit AI management systems internally or for a certification body, choose ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Auditor.
