01How do I get to the PECB exam after the tecnovy training?
PECB offers the ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer exam online through its PECB Exams application and requires no particular course for it. Booked directly, the exam costs USD 1,000 and the certification application USD 500 (as of November 2026). The tecnovy training prepares you for the six exam domains, and PECB runs the exam itself.
02What is the PECB ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer exam like?
You answer 80 multiple-choice questions in three hours and need 70 % to pass. The exam is open book, and PECB allows a printed copy of ISO/IEC 42001 among other materials. Online, you see your result as soon as you submit.
03What happens if I do not pass the PECB exam?
PECB sets no limit on attempts, but after a failed first attempt you wait 15 days before the next one. PECB grants an attempt at no charge within 12 months to participants of a course with a PECB partner; candidates examined online directly by PECB book every further attempt the same way as the first and pay a fee for it.
04Can I take the PECB exam in German?
Yes, PECB offers the ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer exam in nine languages, German and English among them (as of November 2026). PECB's handbook says 30 extra minutes may be granted for a non-native-language exam if requested on exam day. Accommodations, for example for dyslexia, ADHD or after surgery, are requested through your myPECB account.
05Which PECB certification level do I get after passing the exam?
The level depends on your experience, and with no work experience PECB awards Provisional Implementer. Implementer requires two years of work experience with one in AI management and 200 hours of AIMS project work, Lead Implementer five years with two in AI management and 300 hours. Senior Lead Implementer requires ten years with seven in AI management and 1,000 hours, and every level requires signing the PECB Code of Ethics.
06How long is the PECB certification valid, and what does keeping it cost?
PECB certifications are valid for three years. As a Lead Implementer you report 90 hours of continuing professional development (CPD) in that cycle and pay the annual maintenance fee, which PECB lists as USD 390 per three-year cycle (as of November 2026); neither applies to the Provisional Implementer. If CPD or the fee is missing, PECB suspends the certification for twelve months and can revoke it after that.
07Do I need AI experience for the Lead Implementer training?
No, basic knowledge of the standard and experience with management systems are enough for the tecnovy ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer training. Experience in AI management only counts at PECB, and there for the certification level, not for admission to the exam.
08Which tecnovy ISO/IEC 42001 training fits me?
The Foundation training explains the structure and requirements of ISO/IEC 42001 and how it relates to ISO/IEC 27001 and the EU AI Act. The Lead Implementer training builds on that knowledge and shows you how to implement an AI management system. In the Lead Auditor training you switch sides and audit an AIMS, from audit planning to the report.
09Does ISO/IEC 42001 certification mean a company complies with the EU AI Act?
No, ISO/IEC 42001 certification does not show that a company meets the obligations of the EU AI Act. An AI management system can give structure to meeting them, for example the high-risk obligations that apply from 2 December 2027 (Annex III) and from 2 August 2028 (Annex I) under amending Regulation (EU) 2026/1744.
