01How does ISO 42001 Lead Auditor differ from Lead Implementer?
The Lead Implementer builds an AI management system and takes the organisation up to the certification audit; the Lead Auditor checks against evidence whether the system meets ISO/IEC 42001. If you are the one introducing the system, the tecnovy ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer training is the right fit.
02Can I take the ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Auditor exam directly with PECB?
Yes, according to its candidate handbook PECB admits candidates to the exam without a course, and registration runs through the myPECB dashboard. Booked directly, the USD 1,000 fee covers one attempt and no access to the PECB course materials (as of November 2026). The tecnovy training prepares you for the exam; PECB administers and marks it.
03How does the PECB ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Auditor exam work?
You answer 80 multiple-choice questions in three hours, some stand-alone and some based on scenarios, and need 70 % to pass. The exam is open book, and a printed copy of ISO/IEC 42001 is allowed. Online, it runs in the PECB Exams app with a PECB invigilator watching by camera.
04What happens if I do not pass the PECB exam?
PECB sets no limit on attempts, and the second can be no sooner than 15 days after the first exam date. According to PECB, candidates who sit the online exam directly with PECB do not fall under the rule granting a free further attempt after a course with a PECB partner; directly booked retakes incur an additional exam fee.
05Do I need audit experience for the training or the certification?
Not for the tecnovy training or the PECB exam, but yes for the certification level. PECB requires 200 hours of audit activity for Auditor, 300 for Lead Auditor and 1,000 for Senior Lead Auditor, plus two, five or ten years of work experience, including one, two or seven years in AI management respectively, and two professional references per application. Provisional Auditor requires no experience.
06How long is the PECB certification valid, and what does keeping it cost?
PECB certifications are valid for three years. Per three-year cycle PECB requires continuing professional development (CPD) hours, 60 as Auditor, 90 as Lead Auditor and 180 as Senior Lead Auditor, plus the maintenance fee of USD 390 per cycle (as of November 2026). Provisional Auditor requires neither.
07Which language can I take the PECB exam in?
PECB lists the available languages for each exam in its list of PECB exams, and the language is chosen when registering through myPECB. The language of the tecnovy Lead Auditor training is a separate matter.
08Does an ISO/IEC 42001 audit show that an organisation complies with the EU AI Act?
No, ISO/IEC 42001 is a voluntary standard for AI management systems, and neither an audit nor a certification against it demonstrates compliance with the EU AI Act. The tecnovy Lead Auditor training audits against the requirements of the standard; the obligations under the AI Act are covered by the tecnovy EU AI Act training.
09What role do ISO 19011 and ISO/IEC 17021-1 play in the Lead Auditor training?
ISO 19011 gives guidelines for auditing management systems; ISO/IEC 17021-1 sets requirements for bodies that audit and certify management systems. PECB tests the audit principles of ISO 19011 and the closing meeting and audit report under ISO/IEC 17021-1. ISO 19011 has been in its fourth edition since May 2026 (ISO 19011:2026).
