ISTQB® CTAL-TM - Advanced Level Test Management

Test management rarely fails on the test strategy. It fails because the estimate could not be defended, because a known risk interested nobody, or because the team was missing a competence that nobody ever assessed. The tecnovy CTAL-TM training works on exactly those three levels. One whole chapter, 225 minutes, goes to people rather than to technique. The one condition for the exam is the CTFL certificate.

What this module delivers.

CTAL-TM takes test management to project level and explicitly not to organisational level. In the tecnovy training you plan a project's test activities, control quality risks in hybrid development models, and grow your test team's competences deliberately.

Fit

Who this module is designed for

Typical roles

  • You plan the test activities of a project and have to defend the effort.
  • You assess quality risks and decide which of them get actively controlled.
  • You lead a test team and own how its competences develop.

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisites

  • For exam admission: the ISTQB Certified Tester Foundation Level certificate, issued by an ISTQB member board or by a body it has mandated.
  • Alternatively a certificate that the German Testing Board expressly recognises as equivalent.

What helps you in the course

  • Around six months of hands-on testing or software development, as the syllabus recommends.

Consider instead CTFL Supplies the formal prerequisite for CTAL-TM and asks for no prior knowledge itself.

Curriculum

ISTQB CTAL-TM Course in Detail

Syllabus 3.0 splits CTAL-TM into three chapters across at least 22.75 hours of instruction. It runs from the test activities through the product to the team, and the weighting is pronounced: the first chapter takes more than half the time.

01Managing the Test Activities

By far the longest chapter: the whole cycle from planning through to closure.

  • Test planning, monitoring, control and completion as activities
  • Test management inside a hybrid software development model
  • Risk-based testing: identifying, assessing and mitigating quality risks
  • Test process improvement along IDEAL, retrospectives, tool selection and ROI
02Managing the Product

This part is the numbers you justify and report your testing with.

  • Metrics for test management activities, and test reporting
  • What drives test effort, and how to choose the right estimation technique
  • The defect lifecycle and cross-functional defect management
  • What is different about defect management in agile teams
03Managing the Team

The chapter no other ISTQB module at tecnovy carries: the people.

  • The typical competences across the four areas of competence
  • Analysing, assessing and developing competences within the test team
  • The management skills that leading a test team demands
  • Stakeholder relationships, cost of quality and the cost-benefit of testing

You improve the test process along IDEAL and facilitate retrospectives.

  5. 05

You evaluate test tools by their return on investment rather than by feature lists.

  6. 06

You choose estimation techniques and justify the test effort to stakeholders.

  7. 07

You shape the defect lifecycle and adapt it to the way agile teams work.

  8. 08

You analyse your test team's competences and develop them deliberately.

Certified Tester Advanced Level Test Management

Once you pass, you receive the official ISTQB Certified Tester Advanced Level Test Management certificate. The syllabus states explicitly that it is valid for life and does not require renewal.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

01What do I need in order to sit the CTAL-TM examination?
You need the ISTQB Certified Tester Foundation Level certificate, and nothing else. The syllabus additionally recommends around six months of hands-on testing or development, but the German Testing Board's admission rules do not require it. A recommendation and a condition are two different things here.
02How is the CTAL-TM examination structured?
The CTAL-TM exam is 50 scenario-based multiple-choice questions in 120 minutes, and you pass from 58 of 88 points. Questions are worth one, two or three points depending on their cognitive level, and pure recall questions at the lowest level do not appear at Advanced Level at all.
03Is the examination part of the tecnovy CTAL-TM training?
No. The tecnovy CTAL-TM training prepares you for the examination, which is administered by our exam partners iSQI and Brightest. You add it during registration; it is not part of the seminar price.
04Does CTAL-TM cover test management at organisational level?
No, and the syllabus says so explicitly: CTAL-TM covers test management at project level. Topics such as defect detection percentage belong to ISTQB Expert Level, and the model variants of the four competence areas sit outside it as well.
05CTFL also has a chapter called "Managing the Test Activities". What is different here?
The depth. CTFL gives the topic 335 minutes of instruction and stays at an overview of planning, risk analysis and defect management. CTAL-TM gives the same topic 750 minutes and goes into hybrid development models, test process improvement along IDEAL, and the evaluation of tools.
06Does CTAL-TM fit if we work in an agile way?
Yes. Syllabus 3.0 treats test management in hybrid development models as a topic in its own right and gives defect management in agile teams its own section. The tecnovy CTAL-TM training does not assume a purely sequential project.
07Why does the CTAL-TM training run for five days?
The syllabus sets a minimum of 22.75 hours of instruction for accredited courses across three chapters, the first of which alone takes 750 minutes. The tecnovy CTAL-TM training gives that five days, Monday to Friday.
