Fit
Who this module is designed for
Typical roles
- You handle incidents where it is unclear whether the network is the cause.
- You look after switches, wireless or network services without that being your only job.
- You hand network requirements to service providers and have to assess their answers.
Prerequisites
No prerequisites
You can start right away. Helpful: IT fundamentals at CompTIA A+ level, nine to twelve months of practice in network or user support.
Consider instead CompTIA Security+ · CompTIA - Security+ (Plus) Certification Fits better if security across the whole IT landscape interests you, not only in the network.
Curriculum
CompTIA Network+ Curriculum in Detail
The course follows the five CompTIA Network+ exam domains in the order in which they build on each other: first the models and terms, then implementation and operations, then securing the network, and finally troubleshooting, which carries the largest share of the exam at 24 percent.
01Networking concepts
The opening builds the model every later diagnosis leans on.
- OSI layers, and the question of what happens at which level
- Topologies, transmission media and network components
- Addressing and subnets as the basis of any segmentation
- Cloud connections and how they differ from your own data centre
02Network implementation
From the model to a running configuration, on concrete services.
- Setting up routing and switching, and documenting it traceably
- Planning, surveying and securing wireless networks
- Name resolution and address assignment in live operation
- Physical installation and the faults that originate there
03Network operations
What happens between go-live and outage, and is usually underestimated.
- Monitoring load, availability and latency
- Documentation, inventory and change processes
- High availability, redundancy and recovery after failures
- Remote access for administration and mobile work, set up securely
- Capacity planning, before load turns into a problem
04Network security
The smallest exam domain, and still the one that gets expensive fastest.
- Segmentation and access control at network level
- Hardening devices and securing management access
- Typical attacks on networks and how they are recognised
- Physical security of the network infrastructure, which is often forgotten
05Network troubleshooting
The largest part of the exam, and the reason the models were built first.
- A fixed procedure instead of suspicion: isolate, test, rule out
- Command-line tools and what their output actually means
- Typical fault patterns in cabling, wireless and configuration
- Telling performance problems apart from real outages
Outcome
What you will be able to do afterwards
- 01
You map network traffic to the OSI layers and name where a fault sits.
- 02
You read and draw topologies from the data centre to the cloud connection.
- 03
You plan addressing and subnets, and justify how you divided them.
- 04
You configure routing, name resolution and wireless access to requirement.
- 05
You secure network access through segmentation and access control.
- 06
You monitor load and availability and spot deviations early.
- 07
You isolate faults by a fixed procedure rather than by suspicion.
CompTIA Network+
CompTIA awards the certification once you pass the examination. It evidences that you can build and operate networks and isolate faults in them systematically. Unlike the certificates of many other schemes this certification expires three years after you pass; you keep it valid with 30 continuing education units, or renew it by earning a higher CompTIA certification.
